Distance between ports
The sea distance between any two of 1,300+ ports, in nautical miles, on the route ships sail: through the Suez, Panama or Kiel canal when you allow it, with the days at sea at your speed.
Popular port distances
How is the distance between ports calculated?
Over a network of sea lanes that ships actually use, from one port's approach to the other's. The route keeps clear of land, follows the main straits and passes through the Suez, Panama or Kiel canal when you allow it. The result is the sailed distance, not a straight line across the map.
What is a nautical mile?
The unit of distance at sea: 1 nautical mile (NM) is 1,852 metres, about 1.15 statute miles. Speeds at sea are in knots, nautical miles per hour.
How long does a ship take between two ports?
Enter the speed in knots: the calculator shows the days at sea for the route, before any canal waiting time or port stay.
Does the route go through the Suez or Panama Canal?
When it is shorter and you allow it. Untick a canal to see the route around it, for example around the Cape of Good Hope instead of through Suez.
Is the port distance calculator free?
Yes. It needs no sign-up. To work out the cost of the voyage as well (bunkers, port costs, canal dues, charter hire and the cost per TEU), use the Stowlines Container Voyage Estimator.
