Voyage profit and loss calculator
See whether a voyage makes money before it sails: the revenue of each leg against the full voyage cost, down to the profit or loss per TEU.
Calculating P&L in shipping
A voyage P&L sets what the voyage earns against what it costs. On the revenue side, the TEU loaded on each leg and their freight rate. On the cost side, the bunkers, port costs, canal dues, charter hire and any other cost.
Stowlines brings both together on one screen, so the result moves as soon as a port, a speed or a rate changes.
Revenue, cost and margin per TEU
The voyage summary is a revenue and expense view of the voyage: the total revenue, the revenue per TEU, the cost per TEU, the margin and the profit or loss. The Voyage Performance panel works as a vessel profitability dashboard for the voyage on screen. Keep your freight rates in Stowlines and each leg starts from them, or type the rate for that voyage.
TEU utilization and break-even
Enter the Load TEU of each leg and the estimate shows the vessel's TEU utilization for the voyage. Beside it are the break-even freight rate per TEU and the break-even utilization: how much each TEU must earn, and how full the ship must sail at your rates, for the voyage to recover its cost.
Compare the profit of two voyages
Compare up to five voyages side by side to see which routing or vessel earns more: vessel profitability on a trade, at a glance. Use the deviation calculator to see whether an extra port call pays: the added distance, days and cost against the extra revenue.
Vessel-wise and trade-wise profitability
For vessel-wise profitability, sail one trade with different vessels. For trade-wise profitability, sail one vessel on different rotations. Each option shows its revenue, cost, margin, profit per TEU, utilization and break-even, so the container vessel's profitability is clear before the deployment is decided.
It works for one leg or for a round voyage: turn on Round Voyage and the voyage P&L covers the way back as well.

How do I calculate ship voyage profit and loss?
Enter the voyage and its costs in the estimator, then the TEU loaded and the freight rate of each leg. It shows the revenue, the cost and the profit or loss, for the voyage and per TEU.
How do I work out a vessel's break-even freight rate?
Enter the voyage, the TEU loaded and the freight of each leg. The Voyage Performance panel shows the break-even freight per TEU, the rate at which the voyage covers its cost, and the break-even utilization, how full the ship must sail at your rates.
How do I compare two container vessel voyages?
Build both in the estimator and open the comparison: up to five voyages side by side, with their costs, revenue and result.
Is it gross profit or net profit?
It is the voyage result: the revenue less the voyage costs you enter, which works as the voyage's gross profit or contribution margin. For a net figure, add your other costs to the voyage as additional charges.
Can it include slot charter or slot exchange revenue?
There are no separate lines for them. Count those slots in a leg's Load TEU, with the leg's average freight rate, and they are part of the voyage revenue.
Can I see the profit of an extra port call?
Yes. The deviation calculator shows the added distance and days, the extra cost, the revenue and the profit of the call.
