Ship fuel consumption and fuel cost calculator
See what a container vessel burns on a voyage and what it costs: main engine and auxiliaries, at sea and in port, at each speed and by fuel grade.
Vessel fuel consumption, voyage by voyage
The estimator works out the fuel burnt from the vessel's own figures: the sea consumption of the main engine, the auxiliary engine at sea, and the consumption in port. The result shows the total in metric tons for the voyage, split between sea and port, so the vessel's daily fuel consumption and its voyage bunker budget are both in view.
Keep each vessel's speed-wise consumption in your fleet and every estimate starts from its real figures.
Ship speed and fuel consumption
Fuel consumption changes sharply with speed, so a leg sailed faster or slower does not burn the same. Give each leg its own speed and its consumption and bunker cost follow, leg by leg, along with the days at sea. It shows at once what a change of speed saves in fuel and costs in time.
Marine fuel cost by grade
Split the burn over the fuel grades you use, VLSFO, marine gas oil (MGO or LSMGO) or HSFO, each at its own price, with a separate share of the passage in emission control areas (ECA) where a different grade applies. Add your bunker margin and the fuel cost is ready, as part of the voyage cost and the cost per TEU.
At sea, at anchorage and while idle
The ship's fuel consumption at sea follows the main engine and the auxiliary engine at the leg's speed. In port it follows the port consumption, which is the place to allow for manoeuvring. Time at anchorage is entered as idle days, so the vessel's idle fuel consumption and its hire are counted in the voyage.
The voyage shows the fuel at sea and in port in metric tons and its cost, so the fuel budget is there for each voyage, beside the days sailed and the distance.
Weather-related fuel consumption
The Weather / Current setting allows for moderate or adverse conditions on the sailing, and the extra days and fuel show in the estimate. Together with the route weather check, it shows the weather impact on voyage cost before the ship sails.

Ship Fuel Consumption Calculator, answered.
How do I calculate ship bunker consumption?
It depends on the days at sea and in port and the vessel's consumption at its speed, for the main engine and the auxiliaries. Enter the vessel and the rotation in the estimator and it gives the consumption in metric tons, for the voyage and leg by leg.
How much fuel does a container ship consume in a day?
It depends on the ship and above all on its speed. That is why the estimator uses each vessel's own speed-wise consumption instead of one average figure.
Can I see the fuel cost for different speeds?
Yes. Change the speed of the voyage or of one leg and the consumption, the bunker cost and the days update, so you can compare speeds.
Does it handle ECA fuel?
Yes. Part of the sea passage can use the ECA grades, each with its own price, and the rest the normal grades.
What about fuel at anchorage or while manoeuvring?
Waiting at anchorage is entered as idle days and burns the port consumption. There is no separate manoeuvring figure: allow for it in the port consumption.
Can I see the fuel cost per TEU or per sailing day?
The estimate shows the bunker cost beside the voyage days, the sea distance and the capacity, with the full cost per TEU, per nautical mile and per voyage day.
