What the sea distance calculator gives you

Pick two ports from 1,300+ ports worldwide and the calculator shows the sea distance in nautical miles and kilometres, the days at sea at the speed you enter, the canals on the way and the route on a map.

Allow or avoid the Suez, Panama and Kiel canals to compare the routes: through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, through Panama or the long way round.

Why a sea distance is not a straight line

Ships follow sea lanes, straits and canals and keep clear of land, so the distance sailed between two ports is longer than a line drawn across the map. The calculator gives the sailed distance, the figure to plan a voyage with.

Sea miles and nautical miles between ports

Use it as a sea miles calculator or an international sea distance calculator: the ocean distance for ships between any two ports, in nautical miles and kilometres. In the Voyage Estimator the same route engine gives the port rotation distance of a whole voyage, leg by leg, on a map, with vessel route distance comparison between one way and another.

From distance to voyage cost

The distance is the start. The Stowlines Container Voyage Estimator takes the same route and works out the whole voyage: sea and port days, bunkers by fuel grade, port costs, canal dues, charter hire and the cost per TEU.

Work out any sea distance between 1,300+ ports, free.

FAQs

Sea Distance Calculator, answered.

How accurate is the sea distance?

It is the distance along the sea lanes ships use, from port to port, through the canals you allow. Each voyage differs a little with weather routing and pilot stations, so treat it as the planning distance.

Is the sea distance calculator free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.

Can I use it for navigation?

No. It is for voyage planning and costing, not a passage plan: navigation stays with the ship and its charts.

Can I see the time at sea?

Yes. Enter the speed in knots and the calculator shows the days at sea for the route.
